Visita Iglesia is looming and a favorite church destination for Semana Santa (Holy Week) is the Manila Cathedral. For the cathedral pilgrims you will find that your visit would be a little hotter than it is the previous years because late last year, the narra trees in the Manila Cathedral plaza were cut down.
The falling of the numerous trees created quite a stir in the public arena. The Intramuros Commission felt that the narra trees were not anymore serving their intended purpose and were sawn down, said to be replaced with a more attractive species. From what I have heard they were eyeing Delonix regia as replacement. I could just imagine Prof. Zeny Galingan batting an eyelash if she learns about this. She keeps on reminding us landscape students that the fire tree harbours pests like caterpillars. And of course, is not native but hails from Madagascar.
